7th February 2021
Fr Bill writes: I will be opening the church from Ash Wednesday 17th February for public worship and private prayer. I will have a booking system for Ash Wednesday to ensure that numbers for the two Masses are safe. Thereafter I hope to open for weekend Masses on a booking basis for the time being. Some parishioners will still not feel comfortable in coming out. That is fine We all must do what we are comfortable with. There is no virtue in simply taking risks for the sake of it.

Ash Wednesday: Rome has decreed that the marking of foreheads with ashes will not take place this year. In its place we are asked to sprinkle ashes onto people’s hair. You may choose to stay in your place and accept a general exhortation to “repent and believe in the Gospel”.
31st January 2021
Fr Bill writes: Thank you all who have responded and given view as to whether you feel it is right and safe to open the church now or in the near future. The unanimous view seems to be that the time is not yet right. Although the Elmbridge infection rate is given over a seven-day period as averaging 248, it masks significant variations. Parts of Walton are above 450. It seems that the church will remain closed for the time being, but I hope to open it for weekday Masses initially at the start of Lent. That means I hope to open the church for Ash Wednesday 17th February. Later I hope to proceed with Sunday openings. At present these are aspirations and not definite commitments.
4th October 2020
Confirmation: We plan to confirm the young people of the parish during a Mass on Saturday afternoon 10th October commencing at 3.00 pm. Like so many events at present attendance will be limited to the candidates and their sponsors but hopefully the mass will be live streamed to enable as many people as possible to feel part of the celebration. Once we have taken out some benches we will be able to increase the capacity of the church and then can review how many people can be accommodated within the guidelines.
2nd August 2020
Fr Bill writes: This Sunday Deacon Joseph will be preaching. I hope to have some news soon with regard to Confirmations and how we will be organising them probably in October. WE are entering what we used to call the holiday period but with all the uncertainties people will probably either not be travelling or staying  in the UK. I will be away for a few days from after the last Mass on Sunday 16th August and will return on Friday 21st August. There will be no weekdays Masses while I am away, but you will either be able to attend Masses at Weybridge or Thames Ditton or Hersham during that week.

There has been an update from the Prime Minister on the guidance from the with regard to social distancing and the wearing of Masks in church. WE are all expected to wear one apart from children under the age of 12 and those with a medical condition that prevents them from wearing one. All parishioners are reminded that they should not be within 2 metres of anybody not in their household or in their “bubble”. Therefore parishioners are asked not to talk to people in church and to go straight home after Mass.

It goes against the grain to highlight such directives but given that the virus is still active we must for the Common Good take all reasonable precautions  to protect both others and ourselves from the spread of the virus. Furthermore in the light of the mandatory wearing of masks in shops the Bishops are strongly encouraging parishioners to wear masks in church. While I will not wear a mask on the sanctuary as I am more than two metres away from people,  I will wear a mask if I distribute Communion and if I am in the body of the church with other people around.

Sunday 28th June 2020-COVID 19
Fr Bill writes: Following the government announcement that churches will be open for public worship from Saturday 4th July.

Please note that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still suspended. A weekday Mass will count just as well – so please consider coming on a weekday if you can.
I propose to celebrate the first public Mass since the lockdown on Sunday 5 th July at 9.15 am. However there will be a limit of 30 people or households. This means that a family can sit together and provided it is not too large it will count as one household/person. This will still enable another person/couple to sit at the other end of the bench and preserve the two-metre rule. To reduce the 2-metre social distance rule to 1 metre requires us to take mitigating steps such as making the wearing of masks compulsory. I do not wish as yet to go down that route. The wearing of masks will be voluntary.
It will follow, therefore, that if we are to avoid having to turn people away it will be necessary to book spaces in the church in advance to avoid this situation. I am proposing that you email me at mail@sterconwalds.org.uk giving the name of the person booking the place and how many people in that household group. Members of a household group do not have to observe the two-metre rule and may sit together as normal. It will be a case of first come first served. I will rank people in order of my receipt of the emails. No phone calls please!! I will ensure that there is a name in each place that is booked, and it is there that you need to sit.
The situation is very fluid and we cannot rule out the possibility of more updates to the guidance that could change things. It is important that you consult the web site before setting out.

Just letting you all know, what impact your kind support has made.
This is a very excited but nervous Vincent, one of our young people who is in his final year and studying Journalism. (He made the video of Fr John’s funeral)
Another international charity (He volunteers at one of their centres assisting communicating health matters) is paying for him to attend the Connect conference in the Netherlands this week.
Dan dropped him at the airport and we have provided £50 spending money for him for this once in a lifetime experience.

Bishop Richards Visit
Picture

October 1st

In his usual round of parish visitations, Bishop Richard will be visiting us on the weekend of 6/7 October. He will preach at all Masses (sometimes at the beginning or the end). There will be two opportunities to meet Bishop Richard socially. In Hersham drinks after Saturday 5.30pm Mass and in Walton drinks after 11.15am Mass. He will also meet with the parish teams. We look forward to welcoming our Bishop.
September 20th
The open Parish meetings yesterday afternoon and evening were a great success in terms of support and lively discussion, Fr Richard, Fr Bill and about 50 parishioners (in total approx 100) attended both meetings giving lots of points of our "successes", "what we could do better", "threats" and "opportunities". A printed copy of all the points brought forward will be produced soon.

 Sept 11th,
Fr John, May he Rest in Peace

Last Friday there was a mass in the church closest to St Michael's in Uganda led by his friend the Bishop Paul and a good number of Ugandan clergy.
Afterwards there was a “feast” for the children and young people at St Michael's and then in the afternoon the ashes were taken by the children to his adoptive son  Raymonds land, and placed in his final resting place.
Overseas visitors included, his sister, brother in law and one of his nieces who attended,
as well as his friend Deborah from CNN, and also Andrew Robertson, who represented our Parish of St Erconwalds.

July 22nd
Fr Richard spoke at Sunday Masses at ST ERCONWALD, WALTON on 22 July detailing some decisions about the pastoral provision for the parish, parish structures and the use of the presbytery.  These are the notes and substantial points of the talk.
Having heard about the launch of the pastoral plan for the diocese in the bishop’s letter last week.
We need now to turn our attention to the next phase of the pastoral plan for these, our three parishes.
Fr Bill and I will continue as the priests for the parishes and we are both keen to share the work as effectively as possible.
I thank you for your welcome and for offers of help and support.
This meant that we have been able to form a Finance, Fabric and Administration committee. This group has met three times to address these important matters of parish governance.
We have an excellent parish secretary in Susana who is supported from time to time by Jo Meyer.
I have asked a young couple, John & Ola Stayne, committed to the life of the Church and the faith and to work with young people to live in part of the presbytery.
Effectively, their work and their prayerful and practical presence is undertaken in return for rent. This large house has a good upstairs which will become their flat.
Eventually I hope to use another part of the presbytery as a second flat which we might be able to let.
The big meeting room is still in use for the parish.
And then there’s the parish office and another flat above that.
With the demolition of the crumbling old presbytery at Hersham, Fr Bill (who lives with his community of Josephite priests at St George’s Weybridge) will need a new parish base.
During the working days and evenings he will use this above the parish office space.
This will mean that a priest is largely resident here in Walton.
Since Fr Bill is going to be based here it seems sensible that he takes a lead in the day to day running of Walton and also the celebration of the Sunday Masses here.
Parishioners will have a point of contact and continuity.
I shall do this for Molesey & Hersham.
I shall continue as parish priest  and celebrate Masses here at Walton on Wednesdays & Fridays.
I shall continue my programme of parish visiting in Walton and be easily contactable on my mobile.
A suggestion box was opened up for the back of the church. I’m not sure if Fr John had a suggestion box (perhaps this was a new initiative) but I should like its contents to be made available since its comments concern us all and reflect on us all.
Broadly speaking there are two models of parishes sharing priests.
On the one hand the priests rove around on a rota, the alternative is a priest who is identified with a particular community.
I have had experience of both models. The latter, I believe, is the best for our parishes.
I look forward to developing a parish council which will be more of a parish team, by which I mean those who take a lead in various aspects of parish life will be invited to be part of this group.
Fr Bill will organize an open parish meeting for September (scheduled for Wednesday 19th September at 2pm and repeated at 8pm) and the parish team will be formed after that.
This will be the time to revisit Mass times, although the principle that each parish has two Sunday Masses will be a guiding one.
I first knew this parish in 1993 so I have been privileged to know its history and its clergy, as well as some of you, for a long time.
Clearly we have some very important challenges which I hope we can face together.
Personally, I have revisited that old lesson that you can’t please all the people all the time, but having said that your warmth and support have been most generous.
July 22nd
WELCOME to Fr Richard and Fr Bill, there will be a “Drinks and Bring a Plate Party” in the hall immediately after the 11.15am Mass on Sunday 22 July to welcome Fr Richard and Fr Bill to the Parish. All are most welcome. Please see “Sign Up” sheet in the porch, help will also be required to set up tables etc. before and after the 9.15am Mass.

SHARE THE JOURNEY across the Weybridge Deanery,
The walk went well, and all had a great time. Ten parishioners from Our Lady of Lourdes Thames Ditton were welcomed to St Erconwalds on Saturday morning. They passed on the Lampedusa cross made from the wreckage of one of the refugee boats. We all found it a very moving and humbling experience to have this cross with us.  On Sunday,  fifteen members of our parish, of all ages, walked to Christ the Prince of Peace. It was hot and took a bit longer than predicted, but having young children as part of the group gave us more food for thought about what refugee families go through. At Weybridge, Eileen and John took up the challenge of continuing the journey with the Weybridge group to Chertsey and on to Egham Hythe. Thank you to all who participated. The total number of miles logged on the CAFOD website is getting close to twice the distance around the earth. In addition to walking and praying, we can all send cards (in the back of the church) asking the government to be more generous in their support of refugees.
June 21st
SHARE THE JOURNEY across the Weybridge Deanery this weekend 23-24 June. Do come along and support generously. Groups of CAFOD supporters and volunteers will be walking from church to church across the Weybridge Deanery for our Share the Journey campaign. What promises to be a wonderful occasion of people coming together from various parishes is all in solidarity with refugees. The walk will start on Saturday, 23rd June from Thames Ditton  to Walton-On-Thames, then on Sunday, 24th June after 9.15am Mass will head to Weybridge, Chertsey, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green before finishing in Royal Holloway. Refreshments will be served at each stage and a simple prayer will launch and end the walk in each Church. Some people will be able to walk a few stages of the journey while others will walk from their own church to the next on the journey. No stage should be too taxing and lifts should be available back to the set-off point of each stage. In solidarity with refugees and people on the move.
May 24th
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
will be celebrated on Saturday 9 and 16 June at 11.00am. Rehearsals for the communion masses will be Friday 8 and 15 June, 5.30pm - 7pm in the church hall. Please pray for the children and their families.
April 29th
And we all had a great time on the walk

We started off with a blessing from Father Richard. The good Lord heard our prayers for dry weather. It was a bit cool but that was not a bad thing. We had 46 walkers including some of our young confirmation candidates and Yasmine and Therese both in wheel chairs. We stayed and worked together as a team. Our young people even reminded us to say the Hail Mary in support of the Coastal Rosary at 3.00 pm.

On Thursday 15th March (Time to be confirmed) Fr John's body will be brought to the church. Once we have set a time we will ask for volunteers to keep watch.

At 8pm on Thursday 15th there will be a Requiem mass offered by Fr Aloysius. This will be an opportunity for members of the parish who cannot attend the funeral service to pay their respects. Fr John was a great pragmatist and would totally appreciate many may wish to attend but for work and other commitments simply cannot.

There will be followed by Adoration in the church until 10pm.

We will also be serving Tea and coffees in the Hall afterwards.

Friday 16th March 12 noon. Funeral service with Bishop Richard.  Fr John wishes the final commendation to occur in the church prior to the cremation.  His Ashes will be taken to Uganda for Burial.

After the funeral mass there will be a reception in the hall

Please  note this service is likely to be very busy with a large number of priests and a number of overseas visitors.  Some may prefer to attend the Thursday evening service

20th July'17
Last Sunday’s ‘Pot Luck Shared Parish Lunch’  was a tremendous success and a thoroughly enjoyable occasion that brought around eighty parishioners together. It was marvelous to see members of our congregation from so many different countries and this was reflected in the variety of national dishes . There was a mountain of food and all who came went home replete. Thank you to the Link Group who coordinated things and to all who were working behind the scenes in the kitchen. A big thank you goes to Deacon Joseph for arranging the  programme. We are also very grateful to Maureen Dodds who talked about working with the Hospital Chaplaincy in St Peters and to Lucy Cote who spoke about her work in the Catholic Chaplaincy at Brixton Prison. We hope to arrange another meal and get-together on Sunday, September 24th to commence the Autumn programme.
Sunday, July 16th  Shared Parish 'Pot Luck' Lunch  After the tremendous success of the ’Pentecost Pot Luck Lunch’ we have now arranged for another Shared Lunch for Sunday, July 16th, just before the schools break up for the Summer Holidays. Please keep this date free. There is a list in the porch to indicate what food and drink you are able to bring to this lunch.

First Communion 2017
The Celebration Masses were held on Saturdays 10th, 17th and 24th June at 11.00am. The rehearsals for each of the Masses took place on the Friday evening before from 5.30—7.00pm

The Pentecost Pot Luck Lunch  was a tremendous success and enjoyed by all who came. It really demonstrated the vital importance of coming together as a parish to share food and to reflect on how we can serve one another and those around us. There was a real sense that we must move on and build on the initiative started at Pentecost and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. We propose to have another ‘Pot Luck Lunch’ on Sunday, July 16th, just before the schools break up. Please keep this date free. More information soon. A big thank you to Deacon Joseph and Lucy, and to Ann Meehan and Ann Livingstone who met together to plan the event. Also a very big thank you to all who helped in any way preparing and serving the food and in cleaning and tidying up. Thank you also to everyone for bringing food to share with others.
SUNDAY 4th JUNE, 12.30PM
PENTECOST POT LUCK LUNCH,

We all serve God through serving others, although we may not always be aware of it.
We serve in a multitude of ways: we may look after our loved ones,
we may help in the church or volunteer in the community.
This coming Pentecost we will celebrate our gifts of service and love by sharing a Pot Luck Meal.
Please come along and bring a dish to share with others: dish from your country, meat dish, vegetarian dish, bread, cheese, salad, cakes, nibbles, drinks etc.

Apart from an emergency, please only make calls during office hours. (Monday—Thursday 10.00am to 1.00pm)

He is immensely grateful for all the prayers being offered for him and is very aware that it is prayer that is helping him through what has been a very difficult and painful time. So please keep up the prayers! He is also grateful for the cards and good wishes people have sent him.

22nd May 2016
Dear Fellow Parishioners,

I am very pleased to report that Fr John's operation appears to have gone well and is home now convalescing . He has been told that it may take a few weeks for him to fully recover but that in time he will make a full recovery. He is very grateful to the work of the staff at St Peter's Hospital.

From a practical perspective can we remember that as Fr John lives "above the shop"  we need to be very mindful that he needs time to convalesce in peace.

Please can everyone therefore be very mindful about going to the house (unless you have an appointment) or phoning when the office is not open (Monday - Thursday 10-12.30 only). In case of emergency consider contacting Weybridge Parish 01932 842643. If you email mail@sterconwalds.org.uk,  one of the office team will answer as soon as possible.

Please note for the next few weeks until Fr John returns in his normal capacity - the Parish will be run by members of the Community. If something goes wrongs, fall over or doesn't happen please please please do not complain to Fr John about why has this happened or not. It is OUR COLLECTIVE  fault/Problem. We must take the blame.

Please therefore make a special effort to tidy up, switch off lights and make certain things are locked up,
