Weybridge Deanery Looking to 2020

The era of mass when and where you want in a parish ‘run’ by the priest is ending. There aren't enough clergy for that. And (just maybe) that’s a good thing. It forces a re-think.
Who are the Church? We are – all of us. What is the priest’s role? Pastor, not janitor; preacher, not administrator; serving people, not a building; steeped in the Christian Tradition, but without having all the answers.
The place of the Eucharist in the life of the community is also put in question. It is indeed ‘the source and summit’ of our Christian life and prayer (Vatican II), but it shouldn’t be the extent of either – and there may even occasionally be moments when (in solidarity with so many Catholics in the Third World) we yearn for mass but cannot share it. Then how shall we pray?
Pope Francis has invited us to learn again how to be ‘missionary disciples’, people on a journey, filled with the joy of the Gospel. Now we must work out how to do that. Discuss it, pray about it, and offer to get involved. It’s your parish, your life, your calling.

The First St Erconwald's Looking to 2020 Forum will be held on Sunday 5 th October at 10.30-11.00 am between the two Sunday morning masses. |
Here are some questions which might help guide your thoughts |
1. “The number of priests will certainly reduce, and, the laity, will have to be more active in parish life and in
promoting the Good News.” How do I respond to this? Is it opportunity, or threat, or both?
2. What formation and support shall I need to prepare for change?
3. Do I have any practical suggestions concerning how I/we could work together better as a parish and with other local
parishes?
4. What other information do I need?
